Leaves trifoliate, the leaflets broadly cuneate, shallowly-lobed and toothed, 4-5cm long, on stalks to 15cm long. Flowering stems about 15cm tall with a few small bracts. Flowers three to eight, l-2cm across, yellow, the petals elliptic to oval, early summer. Eastern U.S.A. in mountain woods. W.f. var. parviflora, syn. W. parviflora is similar in foliage, but has flowers about half the size with narrower petals.
