Tufted to small clump-forming, with erect softly hairy stems 20-40cm tall. Leaves pubescent, broadly ovate to rounded, widely cordate, coarsely crenate-dentate, 5-12cm long. Flowers yellow with short purple-brown veins radiating from the centre, about 2cm across, late spring early summer. Quebec to Maine, west to south Dakota and south to Virginia and Tennessee, in moist deciduous forest. V.p. var eriocarpa (syn. V. eriocarpa, V. pennsylvanica and V. scabriuscula), is a smaller version usually less than 15cm tall, but with more stems, the leaves finely pubescent to almost glabrous.
