Botanical Description

with erect to ascending or sprawling stems. Leaves

at the base kidney-shaped, crenate 3-9cm across, those above smaller, ovate-cordate, bright green, glabrous or finely pubescent. Flowers 1.5-3cm wide, bright deep yellow with a radiating pattern of short purple veins in the centre, late spring to summer. Alaska to California east to the Rocky Mountains, also in north-eastern Asia, in mountain forest where the soil is moist. In some gardens it self-sows rather invasively. [Pl.535]

V. glacialis Poepp. An earlier name for V. angustifolia qv. but rendered invalid due to an earlier use for an entirely different species.
