Botanical Description

Small clump-forming, usually with very short erect stems. Leaves to 3cm long, trilobed then pinnatifid formed of many linear segments, long-stalked. Flowers 1.6-1.8cm across, the three lower petals lilac to almost white, with a yellow base and purple veins, the upper petals deep reddish-violet, spring. For

V.h. var. trinervata, see V. trinervata. Oregon to Idaho, south to Cahfornia and Utah, in sage-brush scrub, juniper woodland and pine forest up to 1800m. In the wild plants are dormant during the hot dry summer. [Pl.524]
