More or less mat-forming from a somewhat woody base, 15-30cm across, with erect terminal racemes 3-7cm high. Leaves 1-2.5cm
long, ovate, entire or slightly crenate, light green. Flowers 6-8mm across, pale blue or white with darker veins, late spring to late summer. Temperate lowland Eurasia, naturalised in North America and elsewhere. A weedy species, especially in grass, and not worth cultivating. V.s. subsp. humifusa (syn. V. humifusa), V. apennina from the mountains of Europe is more prostrate, with bright blue flowers 7-10mm across.
