Loosely mat-forming to 60cm across, or more in mild areas. Leaves broadly ovate to oblong, often trifid at the base, to 6cm long, coarsely and irregularly toothed or incised, villous. Flowers purple, about 4mm across, in terminal panicles elongating to 15-30cm in length, summer. California to Oregon, west of the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains, in various plant communities up to 2450m. Too large and tender for the rock garden.
