rhizomatous shrub 30-50cm high, erect and bushy. Leaves oval to obovate, 1-2.5cm long, entire, obtuse, bluish-green. Flowers in clusters of one to four, broadly urn-shaped to subglobose, light pink or white flushed pink, early summer. Fruits globose, about 6mm in diameter, blue-black with a waxy white patina, sweet. Northern temperate zone and mountains further south, mainly in moist moorland habitats and bogs. V.u. subsp. microphyllum, from the Spanish Sierra Nevada, is smaller in all its parts and more desirable for the rock garden.
