Erect deciduous shrub to 50cm or more high. Leaves ovate to oblong or elliptic, 2.5-6cm long, serrulate, acute to acuminate. Flowers globular urn-shaped, greenish to yellowish or white tinged green or light pink, summer. Fruits globose, up to 1cm across, black-red to deep purple, tasty but sour. Western North America, from Alaska to California, at subalpine levels in the south of its range, in moist, open conifer forest, margins of deciduous woods and amongst scrub.
