About 12 species of annuals and perennials, mainly from Portugal, Spain and the western Mediterranean. Formerly included in Cistus or Helianthemum. The perennials are herbaceous with a woody stock, basal rosettes of three-veined leaves and erect flowering stems bearing terminal cymes. The five-petalled flowers are yellow and open out flat.
Suitable for sunny position on the rock garden, preferably in sandy soil in mild areas. None of the species is reliably hardy. Propagation of the species is by seed in spring. Most of the annual species are very similar to T. guttata and indeed most have been regarded as forms of it.
