Botanical Description

of gardens). Tuberous rooted perennial with stems 60-100cm long. Leaves digitate, to 2cm wide, composed of five to seven obovate leaflets. Flowers to 3cm long, most of this a long, often upturned orange-red spur, the small crimson sepals and yellow, maroon-edged petals forming a colourful little lantern, winter to spring. Chile, in the coastal fog belt, amongst scrub, and also high in the Andes. The coastal form will stand light frost in an alpine house. The mountain race should be much hardier, but seems seldom if ever to be cultivated. [Pl.510]
