Botanical Description

Stems 20-40cm high, pubescent at the top. Leaves elliptic, 8-12cm long, faintly mottled, with numerous white stomata looking as if dusted with flour. Flowers stemless with up to 5cm long spoon-shaped petals having the handle purple-stained and the bowl green to yellow-green, smelling of rotted apples. Central Missouri to adjacent Ilhnois. Somewhat variable in flower colour, some forms lacking the purplish petal bases.
