Botanical Description

Stems 10-30cm tall. Leaves sessile, ovate to narrowly so, 5-10cm long, mottled. Flowers sessile, dark purple, the petals lanceolate to 3cm long, twisted and widespreading, the stamens large, born vertically, contrasting with the horizontal petals and suggesting the name by their prominence. T.s. forma luteum has yellow flowers. Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
