Stems to 30cm or more high. Leaves stalked, ovate to broadly so, 10-20cm long, slightly spotted brownish or deep green. Flowers stemless, deep oxblood red, petals 6-10cm long by 2-10mm wide, erect, early summer. Cahfornia; Sierra Nevada, with a disjunct population in the southern coast ranges of the same state. Has been confused with T. chloropetalum var. giganteum q.v.
