Densely small mat-forming from a deep taproot, up to 5cm tall. Leaflets 7-15cm long, more or less elliptic. Flowers l.l-2.2cm long, deep red-purple, in dense globular heads subtended by an involucre of six to twelve small bracts, summer. Montana and adjacent Idaho to New Mexico and Utah, mainly in the Rocky Mountains, in subalpine and alpine grassland and stream banks.
