Botanical Description

tall in bloom. Leaves long-stalked, the blades ovate-cordate, shallowly palmately lobed, toothed and hairy, 4-10cm long, bright green. At the junction of the leaf blade and its stalk, a plantlet develops. When a leaf touches the ground roots appear from the base of the plantlet. Leaves can be detached and rooted as for cuttings. Flowers in racemes, each one 1.2-2cm long, tubular but split almost to the base on one side, formed of five greenish-purple calyx lobes and four thread-like, chocolate-purple petals, summer. Alaska to Cahfornia, in woods, often by streams. T.m. 'Variegata',' 'Maculata' and 'Taffs Gold' have varying degrees of a yellow virus flecking.
