Leaves 3-5cm long by 2-4mm wide. Flowering stems 6-12cm high with one or two small leaves. Flowers white to reddish-brown, the tepals about 3mm long, nodding to pendulous in dense racemes to 2cm long, late summer. Eastern Siberia to Korea, Japan and western North America, on alpine slopes and rocky places. T.c. var. fusca has the tepals and young seed capsules deep brown. T.c. var. kondoi has white flowers. Hokkaido. T.c. var. gracilis has slender pointed leaves up to 8cm long, stems up to 8-20cm high and racemes of white flowers to 6cm long. Honshu. T.c. var. kiusiana is similar to var. gracilis, but 20-30cm tall with flowers 4.5-5mm long. Kyushu.
