Usually mat-forming, but sometimes with semi-erect stems forming low tussocks or cushions. Flowering stems 5-25cm high. Leaves strongly aromatic, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, 6-18mm long, usually ciliate at the base. Floral bracts like the leaves. Flowers about 6mm long, pink to purple, in usually interrupted short spikes. Europe including the British Isles, in usually calcareous dry grassland. T.p. subsp. montanus, see T. pseudopulegioides.
