Rhizomes woody, branched and more or less erect, with fibrous roots. Foliage densely tufted, l-3cm high in bloom. Leaves glaucous, narrowly sword-shaped, rigid, with short, chaffy basal sheaths up to 2.5mm wide. Flowers white, 8-10mm in diameter, the oblanceolate tepals fused at their bases into a short tube. Western Chile and Tierra del Fuego as far north as Chiloe, in wet open sites from coastal rocks to bogs on moorland.
