Stems simple or branched, 25-45cm high sometimes more. Leaves sessile, narrowly ovate to lanceolate, ciliate, 5-9cm long, corrugated. Flowers pink to rose-purple, the narrow tepals reflexed only at the tips, solitary from the upper leaf axils, summer. Berries red, 1cm in diameter. S.r. var. longipes has slender elongated rhizomes which form colonies, and flowers papillate within. Eastern North America to the mountains of Georgia, in moist woods and scrub.
