perennial with decumbent grey to white-hairy stems up to 30cm long. Leaves grey-hairy, three-lobed to the base, each division again lobed. Flowers about 2cm across, usually brick-red, in short, dense racemes, mid to late summer. Central United States and adjacent Canada, on dry prairies and plains up to montane levels. Fully hardy in sharply draining soils.
