Roots fleshy, stems branched, 20-40cm tall, flattened and winged, puberulent. Leaves shorter, linear, grassy, those on the stems with enlarged, sheathing bases. Spathes inflated, with membranous margins. Flowers about 2cm across, yellow, often with a purple-brown spot at the base of each tepal, spring to summer. Chile, in dryish areas at 20-1200m. S.g. var. maculatum has more obvious spots, plus extra ones on the tips of each other tepal. S.g. subsp. nanum, S. pumilum and S. pygmaeum are much dwarfer, with broader leaves.
