Confused with and like S. striatum, but having fleshy roots and flowering stems only slightly flattened. Flowers with grey-brown veining, sometimes in terminal clusters only. Chile and Argentina, in dryish habitats. Inferior to S. striatum and less hardy. S. pearcei is very similar but does not exceed 35cm in height and has a maximum of five larger flowers per spathe. Southern Chile and Argentinian Patagonia, at 700-1900m; down to sea level in the extreme south. S. humile is a stable dwarf form from the alpine zones of Cerro Chapelco and Cerro Catedral etc. at 1700m.
