Botanical Description

from a delving fleshy taproot, with slender ascending stems 20cm or sometimes much more in length. Leaves narrowly elliptic to narrowly linear, 5-10cm long. Flowers in loose clusters of five to nine, up to 3cm across, scarlet, each petal deeply split into four lanceolate to linear lobes. California, from sea coast to 1500m, on shaly, grassy or shrub-covered slopes, also in the mountains of Mexico.
