Botanical Description

Similar to S. glacialis but sometimes larger, with leaves to 30 X 8mm. Flowering stems bear up to ten whorls of crowded showy flowers, most frequently a luminous primrose yellow. South-western Europe, northwards to the Jura, at subalpine levels. A very variable plant, but in the best forms from acidic areas of the western Pyrenees extremely attractive. Little known in cultivation; well worth growing. [Pl.468]
