Thickly mat to low cushion-forming to 15cm or sometimes more across, composed of prostrate and erect to ascending, freely branching stems. Leaves in several ranks, triangular to elongated, with a hair-like point, glaucous when young, aging deep grey-green with whitish points. Western North America, on exposed, often rocky mountain slopes. Much confused in cultivation with S. apoda.
