Botanical Description

Compactly mat-forming to 4cm tall. Leaves glaucous, grey-green, linear, apiculate, flattened, 1-1.5cm long, borne in tufts of rosette-like clusters. The stems are densely covered with dead leaves. Inflorescence of dense cymose clusters, reflexed in bud, convex in flower on stems to 15cm tall. Flowers five or six-petalled, yellow with red-tipped keels, to 1cm across. It is probable that the British plant S. forsterianum should be included here. Central and western Europe. S.r. var. elegans is a Moroccan forms with the inflorescences flat-topped and a greater tendency for the leaves to be flushed with red.
