Botanical Description

somewhat tangled mat-forming to 6cm high. Leaves almost globular but flat topped, 6mm long and wide, crowded in four columns, dull glabrous green often flushed light cherry red when mature. Flowers up to 2cm wide, bright yellow in small branched cymes, but only produced in sunny summers. British Columbia to Oregon on cliffs, rocks and screes. Two distinct forms are known: one small, compact and red flushed, the other larger, looser and greener, very similar to S. oreganum except for the arrangement of the leaves. (S. divergens has opposite, decussate leaves while S. oregonum has elongated rosettes.)
