Botanical Description

Leaves two to three, 10-15cm long by l-2cm wide, oblanceolate, bright shiny green. Flowers one to five, pendent.

widely bell-shaped, 1-1.5cm in diameter. The deepest blue forms are 'Spring Beauty' or 'Atropurpurea' and there is also a white form 'Alba'. Caucasus, Crimea and north-western Iran in scrub or light woodland at 1000-2000m. S.s. subsp. armena has one or two flowers, pale blue with a darker stripe and is found in the Caucasus and north-eastern Turkey in similar conditions. Subsp. kurdistanica, ingridae, leepii, monanthos and mordakiae are closely allied to subsp. armena. [Pl.455].
