Rosettes solitary or a few together, monocarpic. Leaves strap-shaped, 3-7cm long, dark green glandular-hairy, not lime-encrusted. In the wild offsets are formed but this does not usually happen in cultivation. Flower stems 25-35cm high usually branched from the middle bearing a loose panicle of numerous, very distinctive flowers with narrow, coppery-orange petals 5-8mm long. Alps, Carpathians in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Romania. Prefers partial shade. Grows readily in cultivation and comes true from seed. The Carpathian plant produces a low, 10-15cm branching inflorescence without a main axis and is named var. demissa. It is of no horticultural interest. Has hybridised in the wild with S. aizoides to produce S. X hausmannii and S. X regelii but neither is of horticultural interest.
