A polymorphic species varying considerably in the shape and size of the leaves and inflorescences but much like S. cespitosa. Leaves most frequently trifid with a broad petiole. Flowering stems 3-10cm high bearing a few or sometimes only one flower, petals 3-9mm long. One of the very few South American saxifrages with a range extending along the Andes from the Magellan Straits through Chile to Peru. Grown in some botanic gardens. [Pl.446].
