North American and Russian counterpart of S. aspera. Forms a dense mat of decumbent, leafy shoots. Leaves 8-15mm, oblong-lanceolate, shortly ciliate. Flowering stems 6-15cm tall bearing a corymbose cyme of several pale yellow flowers, petals 3-6mm long with red spots on the upper half. This form is called var. austromontana but in Japan there is a form with flower ing stems only 4-6cm high; var. rebunshirensis. Seed is sometimes offered in seed exchanges. Requires cool moist conditions and is not easy to grow.
