Botanical Description

(9). Laxly tufted with leafy ascending flowering stems up to 25cm long. Leaves 1-2.5cm long, linear-oblong, entire, fleshy. Flowers 6-9mm across, in a terminal, leafy cyme, bright orange-yellow, often spotted with red, rarely dark copper-red all over (forma atrorubens). Widespread throughout the northern hemisphere, including the British Isles, and the sole member of its section. Typically it grows alongside and in mountain rills and boggy areas and is not easy to accommodate in the garden, particularly in the warmer south as it needs cool, moist conditions.
