Botanical Description

rosetted perennial with erect stems 30-60cm tall. Summer leaves usually lyrate-pinnatifid, the winter ones more or less entire, oblong to obovate, to 15cm or more long (including stalk). Flowers blue or purple, to 3cm long, in fairly dense spikes, late spring to summer. South-eastern U.S.A., in forest clearings and open woods where the soil is sandy.
