Similar to S. herbacea, but leaves broadly elliptical to orbicular, 0.5-1.5cm long, dark green above paler below, entire. Catkins terminal on leafy shoots, orbicular, few flowered, scales dark purple with long hairs. Circumpolar and mountains south, in tundra, screes and moraines, generally on nutrient rich non-acidic soils. Probably not in general cultivation, plants widely grown under this name being small forms of S. repens, S. myrtilloides or their hybrids.
