with slender branches, pubescent at first, becoming red-brown and glabrous with age. Leaves obovate to elliptic, 6-12 X 3-10mm, obtuse, base rounded, entire, shining green above, pale green below, petioles up to 4mm long. Catkins, often few flowered, appearing on short leafy shoots, the males globose up to 1cm long, female somewhat longer, scales reddish in the upper half, hairy within and on the margins. Japan; alpine species from Hokkaido (Mt. Daisetsu).
