with semi-rosetted basal leaves and usually numerous ascending or spreading flowering stems 5-10cm long but sometimes twice this. Lower leaves linear, to 5mm long, the upper much shorter with many dwarf shoots in their axils creating a knotted effect. Flowers white, 8-15mm across, late summer. S.m. var. moriliformis has prostrate stems with the dwarf shoots detaching and acting like bulbils. Europe to Iceland, Greenland and eastern to central North America, in damp peats and sandy habitats. A modestly pretty plant perhaps deserving to be tried on the rock garden.
