More or less clump-forming from a thickish woody rootstock. Stems simple or with a few branches, ascending to almost erect, 15-40cm long. Leaves oblong-lanceolate to ovate, up to 10cm long, with shortish stalks. Flowers in compact panicles, early summer. Fruiting valves heart-shaped, 1.4-1.8cm across, reddish and attractively net-veined. California to Washington State and Saskatchewan. An eye-catching species worthy of cultivation.
