Similar to R. acaulis, but herbaceous stems to 20cm or more in length, leaflets 2.5-6cm long and pinkish flowers in ones to threes, usually less than 3.5cm across. Fruits composed of a few large drupelets. Eastern Canada, northern Europe and Asia, in similar habitats but often where alkaline. R.a. var. grandiflorus see R. acaulis.
