Botanical Description

Leaves about 2cm long but sometimes up to 5cm, thick textured with rolled margins, deep green above, white felted beneath. Flowers 1.5-2cm long, pale violet blue and white mainly in spring, but then off and on till autumn. Mediterranean region and southern Europe from Portugal to European Russia and Caucasia, on dry, open or bushy and rocky places and dunes. R.o. 'Prostratus' is mat-forming with dense bright green leaves and pale blue flowers; (see also R. lavandulaceus). 'McConnalls Blue' has richer-hued foliage and deeper blue flowers, but in time semi-erect, arching stems arise and the plant gets rather larger. R.o. 'Benenden Blue' can reach 1m in time, with semi-erect stems, very narrow leaves and rich bright blue flowers. It is one of the narrow-leaved Corsican rosemaries which have been botanically classified as var. angustissimus, and horticulturally as R.o. 'Angustifolius'.
