Botanical Description

More or less suckering habit, 60-120cm tall, sometimes much more. Stems usually reddish-brown, often almost spineless or sometimes thickly set with slender straight prickles. Leaves 5-15cm long, composed of seven to nine elliptic leaflets, sometimes glandular or downy beneath, toothed. Flowers 4-6cm across, deep pink to purplish-pink, solitary or in twos or threes, summer. Alps, Apennines and Pyrenees, in woods, scrub and on open slopes. R.p. 'Nana' is more freely suckering and rarely above 30cm in height.
