Flowers usually solitary, to 6cm long and 8cm across, slightly nodding, white or rich pink with greenish-yellow bases and crimson guide lines often broken into streaks and dashes. Chile and Argentina, in open steppe communities and bare soil patches at 1800-3500m. A true alpine bulb which forms clumps in the wild and is perhaps the finest member of the genus. [Pl.423].
