Leaves 5-10cm in height, 5-10mm wide, grey-green, hairy. Flowers with a tube about 2mm long. R. baurii var. baurii has flowers 1.5-2cm in diameter, in var. platypetala the plant is more robust and the flower diameter 2-2.5cm. Var. confecta has green, not grey-green leaves. In cultivation a complete colour range is available from white to deep red with many named cultivars and it is advisable to select plants in flower. Alternatively, seed will usually produce a wide range of shades and the preferred colours can rapidly be propagated by division. The flowering period is a long one starting outdoors in late April with a
main flush in May and then continuing sparsely until September. Reasonably hardy though plants will be lost in severe winters.
