Small clump-forming, with flowering stems up to 20cm or more in height. Basal leaves broadly lanceolate to ovate-cordate, entire, somewhat leathery and more or less pubescent. Flowers solitary to several, 2-3cm wide, usually white or variously veined or flushed red or pink, late spring to summer. Pyrenees, mountains of northern Spain and (rarely) the Alps, in moraines and among rocks, mainly limestone. R.p. 'Nuria' (from E. Pyrenees) has the 3cm wide white flowers heavily veined rose-purple which, from a distance creates an apple-blossom pink effect. [Pl.407].
