The most easterly and smallest of the Arthritica group of section Auricula. Leaves obovate to elliptic, sharply acute, leathery with a cartilaginous, entire margins, dark green above, paler beneath, l-4cm long by 5-12mm wide. Flowers reddish-lilac with a white eye, funnel-shaped to flat, 2-3cm across, often nearly stemless. Kamnicka Alps, northern Slovenia, extreme eastern Austria (Karawanken), Gailtal Alps and central Transylvania (ssp. baumgartneri). 1800-2100m on limestone meadows and stony slopes. Easy to grow in limy troughs and raised beds but rather a shy flowerer in cultivation.
