Botanical Description

A creeping member of section Soldanelloides. Flattened rosettes form mats. Leaves oblong-obovate, toothed, sometimes farinose beneath, 2.5-5cm long and 1.2-2.5 cm wide, the margins with a dense fringe of hairs. Flowers bell-shaped in shades of purple or blue, 1.5-2.5cm long, pendent, two to six on rather spindly stems 12-20cm high. Central and eastern Nepal and neighbouring Tibet, on mossy cliff faces and steep earth banks, 3600-5500m. Not too difficult to grow in a cool place outside, but tends to form new rosettes rather than flower and flowering stems when formed tend to twist and become distorted.
