A deciduous petiolarid similar to P. calderiana, and with an almost equivalent range of flower colour. Differs in the absence of farina, in the narrower, acute calyx-lobes, quite different leaf shape in the summer, forming a narrow petiole and truncate blade base, notched petals lobes and orange roots. West Nepal to south-east Tibet, wet alpine meadows, 2500-4900m. Yellow forms (subsp. nepalensis) tend to grow further west than purple forms (subsp. tsariensis). Grows well in cool areas, especially the Scottish Highlands in moist, humus-rich sites and persisted well for many years, but rarely seen today. Var. porrecta from SE Tibet was a particularly magnificent form. Subsp. tanneri, from Sikkim and west Bhutan is the least showy form.
