Botanical Description

The only Chartacea species regularly seen in cultivation and one of three primulas native to Vietnam. Leaves evergreen, thin, brittle with the texture of greaseproof paper, olive-green with paler nerves when mature, pale green at first, with an oval blade, cuneate base and narrow green petiole. Flowers produced on many thin green glabrous stems in early spring, 2-8 together on very short peduncles, bright pink to rose with a yellow eye, 15-20 mm in diameter, notched but not dentate. Capsule is of the 'petiolarid type' (dehiscing by a crumbling membrane). Mt Sapa, 1800m, shady banks near water. Hardy to about -6C, best grown in a shady place in the alpine house, susceptible to virus.
