(Amethystina). Leaves smooth, rather fleshy, suberect, elliptic to ovate, sharply toothed, firm in texture, glabrous, 2-5cm long. Flowers bell-shaped, pendant on very short stalks, petals dentate, violet to purplish-blue, 1.5cm across, fragrant, carried in umbels of two to six on 5-15cm tall stems. Boggy sites with some water flow usually above 4000 m. China; Yunnan, Sichuan. The widespread plant is var. brevifolia; the diminutive var. amethystina is restricted to the Cang Shan. Var. argutidens with narrow bells is probably not distinct.
