ex Torr. & A. Gray (syn. P. gelida). Tufted from a slender, branched rootstock, the flowering stems 10-30cm tall. Leaves mainly basal, ternate, the leaflets 1-3.5cm long, fan-shaped, sharply toothed, bright green. Flowers yellow, 1.8-2.2cm across, the petals notched at the tips in small loose clusters, mid-summer to early autumn. P.f. var. grayi has rounded glaucous-tinted leaflets. British Columbia to California in conifer forest and alpine fellfields at 1500-3500m.
