Superficially like P. fruticosa but seldom more than 90cm high with looser, prominently dark-veined stipules and leaves frequently with only three, usually broader leaflets. The deep yellow flowers are generally larger mostly with an epicalyx of ten rounded segments. P.a. SSW 8221 (from Nepal) always has trifoliate leaves and rich to pale yellow flowers. P.a. var. albicans and var. bulleyana both bear white silky hairy leaves, those of bulleyana having five leaflets of very firm texture and broadly elliptic outline. P.a. 'Beesii' (syn. 'Nana Argentea') is almost identical with P.a. albicans. It is hummock-forming to 60cm high with three to five silvery leaflets and rich yellow flowers. Himalaya to south-eastern Tibet, western and northern China on open slopes in the lower alpine monsoon belt.
